Members of this genus occur in the upper Maranon drainage in northwestern Peru, extending into the Cordillera del Condor of southeastern Ecuador. This genus was erected to include two species whose phylogenetic status was previously unresolved. This genus forms a clade sister to Ranitomeya + Andinobates. Almendariz et al. (2012), in the description of E. condor, found that the original synapomorphies proposed for the genus were not present in the new species and therefore the synapomorphies of Excidobates are entirely genetic.
