Characterized by the first finger being shorter in length than the second. This genus was recently split by Brown & Twomey et al. (2011), with the minuta group being elevated to its own genus, Andinobates, while Ranitomeya was restricted to species in the ventrimaculata group. As currently defined, Ranitomeya is composed entirely Amazonian species and has the synapomorphy of pale limb reticulation.
